As the school year approaches, you’re probably focused on gathering supplies, setting schedules, and preparing your kids for academic success. But there’s one thing that should be high on your list: their dental health. A bright, healthy smile can boost your child’s confidence and help them stay focused in class. Here’s how to make sure their teeth are ready for the school year.

Dental Hygiene Checklist for the School Year
Keeping a daily dental routine is key to your child’s overall health. Here are some basics to include in your back-to-school prep:
- New toothbrush: Replace it every 3-4 months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
- Fluoride toothpaste: Look for one approved by the ADA.
- Floss or floss picks: Flossing plays an important role in preventing cavities.
- Mouthwash: An optional but helpful tool for teens with braces or those prone to cavities.
- Reusable water bottle: Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
Make brushing and flossing part of the morning and bedtime routine. For younger children, you might need to supervise or help them brush. Older kids can take more responsibility, but a quick reminder never hurts.
Smart Snacking and School Lunch Tips
It’s not just what your child brushes with, but what they eat that affects their teeth. Sugary snacks and drinks can lead to tooth decay. Instead, pack lunches and snacks that support dental health.
- Fresh fruits and vegetables: Crunchy options like apples and carrots help clean teeth naturally.
- Cheese and yogurt: High in calcium, these foods strengthen enamel.
- Whole grains and lean proteins: Provide nutrients that support gum health.
- Avoid sticky, sugary treats: These cling to teeth and feed bacteria.
