Should You Get Mercury Fillings Removed?
Whether to remove mercury (amalgam) fillings is a personal health decision, but generally, intact fillings in healthy individuals don’t require removal; however, removal is often recommended for children, pregnant/nursing women, people with existing neurological/kidney issues, or those with allergies, but only by a dentist using Safe Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) to prevent high mercury vapor exposure during the procedure. Intact fillings pose minimal risk butremoving them unnecessarily can release more mercury vapor than leaving them, so discuss it with a dentist.
If your worried about having the “dark” fillings in the back teeth, don’t worry because when you smile, you can’t even see them. A way to “whiten and brighten” your smile is to professionally bleach your teeth. It just takes minutes to take an impression of your top and bottom teeth. We make the bleaching trays in office and in a few days, they will be ready for pickup with a tube of bleach. These are much more professional than Crest strips and less sensitive as well. So, at your next visit, please ask us about our bleaching trays, we would be more than happy to explain them to you.
