☀️Summer Dental Care Tips
Maintain a healthy smile this summer by sticking to a consistent oral hygiene routine: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and floss. Stay hydrated with water to rinse away sugars from summer treats, protect teeth during sports with mouthguards, and schedule dental check-ups before school starts.
Be sure to limit sugary and sticky treats. Opt for crunchy, nutritious snacks like apples, carrots, and celery, which can help clean teeth naturally. Protect your lips with a lip balm of at least SPF 15 to guard against sun damage.
Who swims a lot in the summer? Anyone have a pool? Has anyone heard of swimmer’s calculus? It is a yellowish-brown or dark brown tartar stain that develops on teeth — particularly the front ones — from extended exposure (6+ hours per week) to chlorine or bromine in swimming pools. It is caused by the high pH of treated water breaking down saliva and creating mineral deposits. Regular professional dental cleaning is required to remove it.
So if you or your children swim often or are involved with swim teams, it might be a good idea to come in for cleanings more frequently. To help prevent swimmer’s calculus:
- Rinse immediately with fresh water after leaving the pool.
- Use fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash to help protect the enamel.
- Use pool pH strips to keep water properlv balanced.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing after a swim – enamel can be temporarily softened.
- Watch for sensitivity as high chlorine levels can strin enamel.
Warm weather only comes for a short time in Michigan, as you all know – so enjoy it and get some good vitamin D safely!
